Buck Lake Native Plant Garden in Buck Lake Park in Hansville celebrates 20 years as a public garden this year! The first earthwork began in 2006 on a 1.5 acre abandoned bike motocross track by volunteers to rehabilitate the area into a demonstration native plant garden. Like all gardens BLNPG has evolved with the addition of new plants and the editing out of garden errors. In hardscape of swales and curtain drains plus a large rain garden filter the water going into Buck Lake. The recent introduction of a moss garden extends the range of native plants.
Our educational, beautiful, and serene area is beautiful all year long. The currently (no pun) blooming shrubs bow out as the skunk cabbage glow in the rain garden and the dogwood and azaleas take the spotlight. Summer highlights include the mixed hedgerow and blooms in the seasonal streambed including yarrow and cinquefoil. Fall offers colorful foliage and berries and fruits for wildlife. The shrub dogwoods are the stars of winter with red and gold branches while ferns provide that green color that we love here in the Northwest.
Volunteers continue to maintain the garden creating a space to share knowledge and community while weeding, mulching, pruning, planting, transplanting, grooming paths, enjoying the space shared with local fauna, and thinking about how to make the garden a better place for all beings.
Additional support comes from Kitsap County Master Gardeners, local garden clubs, the Greater Hansville Community Center, businesses, and individuals generously donating time and ideas, materials, grants, and money.
The garden is located at 6778 Buck Lake Road NE, Hansville, WA 98340.
