Friends of Miller Bay (FOMB) is dedicated to improving quality of life by preserving natural habitats in the Miller Bay watershed. We are actively building a collaborative community of informed members, landowners, neighbors and residents to share information and resources, to become more impactful and effective in conserving our natural resources and to preserve and protect the beauty of our area for the future. We are the stewards of two land preserves within the Miller Bay watershed. Our work contributes to the overall health of Puget Sound.
We organize work parties to remove invasive species, plant native plants and maintain safe access within the preserves. We fundraise in support of our goals to ensure natural spaces will be here for future generations. We identify targeted property acquisitions that preserve habitat and protect wildlife corridors.
Removing ivy from an old-growth forest
We have been successful in establishing and stewarding two land preserves on Miller Bay: The Miller Bay Preserve, a rare 13 acre parcel of undeveloped land in the tidewater area of Grover’s Creek; and the Cowling Creek Forest Preserve comprised of 1.9 square miles, 12 miles of streams and several trails. The trails provide public access to a beautiful restoration project in an evolving state of restoration. Both of these nature preserves were accomplished in partnership with Great Peninsula Conservancy. Most recently we saved a small old-growth forest above Miller Bay, which is now part of Kitsap County Parks and managed with a conservation easement by Great Peninsula Conservancy. We strive to foster working relationships and networks between local environmental groups, communities and agencies throughout the greater Kitsap Peninsula region. Future plans include expanding preserved lands, protecting tidelands and restoring native Olympia Oysters in Miller Bay.
