Left Behind and Without: Changing Lives, Building Futures- Helping kids affected by incarceration.
Incarceration affects far more than those behind bars. In the United States 1 in 28 children has a parent in prison or jail, and one in 12 will experience parental incarceration at some point during their childhood. Additionally, some children face the justice system themselves, becoming incarcerated at an early age and enduring its long-lasting impacts. These children face unique challenges—emotional, social, and financial—that can leave them vulnerable to cycles of hardship and limit their ability to thrive.
At Left Behind and Without, we believe every child deserves the chance to rise above these challenges. Helping over 90 children in the past 12 months, our mission is to provide children with incarcerated parents—or children who have been incarcerated themselves—with access to extracurricular activities that foster their passions, build confidence, and connect them with positive mentors and peers. From sports teams to music lessons, summer camps to art classes, we ensure that no child is left behind due to circumstances beyond their control.
Why This Matters
Children affected by incarceration often experience:
- Emotional and Social Struggles: Feelings of isolation, shame, and stigma that can hinder their development.
- Barriers to Opportunities: Financial difficulties that make extracurricular activities, like sports or music, out of reach.
- Higher Risks of Recidivism: Without healthy outlets and strong role models, these children face a greater risk of entering the justice system themselves. We know that children who have had a parent incarcerated are 6 times more likely to become incarcerated themselves. These children need our help!
The Impact
Since our founding, Left Behind and Without has made a profound difference in the lives of children, families, and communities:
- For Children: Participation in enriching activities leads to improved self-esteem, social skills, and academic performance.
- For Families: Parents and caregivers see strengthened relationships and a sense of pride in their children’s achievements.
- For Communities: Positive youth engagement reduces stigma and strengthens community bonds.
- For Society: Empowered children break the cycle of incarceration, reducing recidivism and fostering long-term change.
