Tracyton Community Library is the little library that could, serving the community for nearly 100 years and since 1985 without taxpayer dollars.
Some history:
1934: A lady with an extensive private library visited Tracyton residents with a basket full of books she would lend to them.
1935: A branch of the Kitsap County Public Library was established in Tracyton.
1949: The Tracyton Library started a summer reading program that goes on to this day.
1985: Kitsap Regional Library decided to close the Tracyton library branch.
1985 – 2025: Dedicated volunteers kept the library running ever since, by creating a non-profit and donating well over one thousand volunteer hours annually. The library has books, DVDs, and magazines for check out and accepts item donations from the public. These items are sorted and resold to fund library operations and upkeep. The library sells books, puzzles, DVDs, CDs, and LPs.
The library hosts Tracyton community events, including the annual Tracyton Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration in collaboration with the United Methodist Church. The summer reading program for children and adults is also very popular. Fundraising events are held throughout the year including themed sales and Christmas present wrapping at the Kitsap Mall.
Most of the library volunteers are members of RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program).
