The corner of 6th and Rainier has been home to quite a few community meetings, support group start ups and a parking lot where conversations and interventions seem to flow easily. One of the most lasting and impactful group that has developed is Gods Broken Home University (GBHU) which has been a magnet for local youth who identify with gang or street culture but want futures with positive power roles and goals for personal development.
GBHU came about and has grown organically. A group of long-term friends who are closer than most families, saw a need for a positive support group or mentorship program. They partnered up with North West Credible Messenger’s in 2020 to strengthen a message of hope to the local youth seeking a lighthouse for safety from the streets of Kitsap County which seem to result in death or conviction for most trapped in the lifestyle. To be clear GBHU is not a religious based group. The word God seems to be universally understood to represent something large, loving and powerful. Broken Homes is a generalization of the circumstances many of the group members come from. And the University is to remind everyone of the lessons that the participants will bring and leave with.
