Why is Buster a miracle Kitty? The first miracle is that he is alive. When he was approximately 3 weeks old, he was abandoned in a yard with 2 dogs who attacked him. A neighbor heard the commotion and literally pulled Buster from the jaws of the dog. Once he got Buster safe, he called KARE.
The second miracle is Buster has all four legs. When KARE picked Buster up he was not walking on one of his back legs. We took him to the emergency vet clinic and x-rays showed his back left leg was snapped. His leg was casted and we sought opinion from a local orthopedic veterinarian specialist, and his prognosis was due to Buster’s young age multiple surgeries would have to be done as he grew. The most humane approach would be to remove the leg.
Fast forward two weeks. The orthopedic vet and his family decided to adopt Buster and offered to pay for the surgery to remove the leg. BUT, when they took Buster in to get updated x-rays the leg has slipped back into place and was mending.
So that is why we call him Bustopherson the Miracle Kitty.

Mission
Kitsap Animal Rescue & Education (KARE) is a volunteer-powered, non-profit organization, based out of Kitsap County, whose mission is to provide animal welfare education as well as animal rescue/shelter support for the community. We provide classes, workshops, and seminars revolving around dog behavior, communication, and training, in the effort of reducing the number of homeless and relinquished pets in the area. We hope to share our mission while continuing to build our network of community partnerships.
2025 has been a highly successful year for our new HOPE (Housing Outreach Pet Education) program. HOPE is committed to providing affordable animal behavior education, training and essential pet resources for people and their pets, with a focus on those who are experiencing housing instability.
This year we are hoping to raise funds to replenish our KARE Medical Grant program which helps our low income neighbors with emergency veterinary bills. In addition our HOPE program has covered costs of veterinary medications, emergency treatment, tests as well as free vaccine clinics for many of our co-shelter animals and those dealing with housing instability.
Help us raise $25,000 this year!!
